Robert Marion Messmer

Robert Marion Messmer, age 83, of Marion died peacefully after a brief battle with stage IV lung cancer on February 1, 2016 in the home and care of his great niece Barbara Perini. He was born October 21, 1932 in Wyandot County to the late Walter and Sarah (Ulrich) Messmer. Robert was joined in marriage on June 28, 1958 to Jean (Kern) Messmer by Rev. M.E. Hollensen in the Emanual Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death on July 3, 2012. He was also preceded in death by three sisters Alice Smith, Bernice Kirian, and Shirley Uribe, eight brothers Raymond, Vernon, Myron, Paul, Earl, Francis, Richard, and Wayne as well as stepson Terry Alspach.
Bob was one of fourteen children and is survived by two siblings, sister Reva Jane Thompson of Marion and brother David Messmer of Oklahoma. He is also survived by two step grandchildren, Shannon Alspach and Misty Alspach both of Marion, four step great grandchildren and one step great-great grandson as well as many nieces and nephews.
Robert was a graduate of Upper Sandusky H.S. in 1951 and excelled in basketball. He was a Korean War Veteran serving our country in active duty from 1951-1954. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, National Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Robert was employed by the Eaton Corp. from 3/29/1955 until retiring 1/1/1995 with almost 40 years of service. He had a love of clothing which led him to also work in retail at J.C. Penney, Elder Beerman and Jim Dugans.
In addition to being a member of Emanual Lutheran Church for nearly 59 years he was also a member of the Marion Senior Center, Am. Legion, Eagles, VFW, and the Moose Lodge #889. He had a love for dancing, traveling and visiting with his many wonderful friends.
On June 15, 2013 he was blessed to have been chosen by his church to attend Honor Flight to visit the World War II and Korean War Memorials.
A Graveside Service with Military Rights will be held in the Frame Cemetery, Meeker on Saturday at noon with Pastor Mark Schuring officiating. No calling hours will be observed. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Emanual Lutheran Church, Heartland Hospice, or the Honor Flight through AFFORDABLE CREMATION SERVICES OF OHIO, 1701 Marion Williamsport Rd., Marion 43302.
